We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, no-kill animal rescue in West Los Angeles. We work with the city to rescue dogs and cats that are in danger of being euthanized from shelters. We take in many special needs animals and animals that need extra medical care. Our kennel houses approximately 100 cats and 40 dogs. Our staff and volunteers are hardworking, dedicated, and self-motivated. We support each other and are passionate about our mission of rescuing animals in need and guiding them on their journey to a happy forever home.
We are seeking a full-time adoption counselor to assist with adoptions, office work, and animal medical needs. This paid position is 40 hours/week with a weekend schedule (Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon, Wed with Tue and Thur off). You will work holidays. This position is to begin immediately.
While this is a position where you are working directly with animals, this is primarily a customer service job. You will deal with people everyday and need to have excellent communication and customer relation skills. You need to be kind, confident, and have the ability to say no in a calm, rational manner.
Your job is to interview individuals and families and match them with the right pet. You will be responsible for finding dogs and cats a forever home where they will be loved and cared for. In order to do this, you need to be able to review applications and ask uncomfortable questions diplomatically.
The right candidate will possess the following:
- Willingness to take direction, listen, and ask questions if you do not know the answer
- Excellent people and communication skills: both written and oral
- Ability to handle difficult situations in a calm, rational manner without getting overly emotional
- A reliable vehicle to do home checks and vet visits
- Ability to learn quickly, multi-task, and handle multiple assignments at once
- Ability to work independently and as a self-starter
- Must be detail-orientated!
- Comfortable handling dogs and cats that may be frightened and/or nervous
- Vet Tech experience highly encouraged
- Willingness to do any task. We all wear many hats and you may be asked to exercise dogs, clean out cages, or clip cat nails
- Proficiency with both MACs and PCs
- Spanish fluency is a plus
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist with the adoption process
- Give tours of the kennel to the public
- Communicate with the public on behalf of the organization in person and by telephone
- Home checks: inspect a potential adopter's home prior to adoption
- Prepare paperwork for adoption
- Ensure animals are ready to go home
- Educate adopters on acclimating new pets to their home, training, diet, etc. Adopters may need guidance and you need to be able to provide this.
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Organize and update files
- Input animals into computer system
- Assist in giving correct, measured medication to dogs and cats including pills, liquids, and intravenous fluids. If you have vet tech experience that is a bonus. If not, we will train the right person who is careful, confident, and willing to learn.
