We make custom t-shirts and other garments for customers in West LA and all around the country (we're located at 10675 W Pico, near the Westside Pavilion).
There are three facets to this position: Customer Service/Sales Rep, Graphic Artist/Adobe Guru, and all-around problem solver.
For the first part, we need you to be fun, cheerful, extroverted, and truly interested in making customers happy. Some of our customers enter the store knowing what they want, but others are looking for us to help them find ideas. You'll need to work well with our printers and sales staff to help ensure that our customers get the right art, printed on the right shirt, looking the way they wanted. This job also requires putting together price quotes quickly, so we need someone who is good with numbers.
For the Adobe Guru part, we need you to be a real Adobe problem solver - we use CS5 on PCs. This is only occasionally a design-from-scratch position - you won't be building your portfolio much here, but you'll have a chance to really build your proficiency with the Adobe tools, especially Illustrator. You'll be working with customers to make their simple design ideas a reality. Most of your time with Adobe products will be spent doing technical problem solving (fixing paths, converting raster shapes to vector, matching fonts, scanning and resizing photos, etc). You'll certainly need a creative mind and a talent for visually appealing layout. If you've got a big ego and you're confident that your artistic style is always the best, this is not the right job for you. We need to be able to give our customers our artistic opinion, but be willing to (happily) do the job however they want.
Finally, we need you to be a smart, fast problem solver who is organized and good with numbers. You'll be putting together complex quotes for customers, figuring out tight delivery schedules with our partner vendors, and figuring out how to fix machines when they act up - right when the job is due! This is a fun job, but not a mellow job - our shop is fast paced almost all the time.
Regarding art, here are some things you'll do often:
* Find a good font to suit the mood of a customer's idea, mock it up on a virtual t-shirt
* Convert a jpg to vector graphic by tracing with the pen tool (sometimes livetrace works, but usually this is a manual job)
* Create a finished product from the customer's partially finished art and/or sketch on a napkin.
If you can do all of the following, you have the computer skills we need:
++ Illustrator ++
* Use the pen tool to quickly and accurately trace a low-res jpg
* Use the pathfinder to combine two paths, combine a stroke with a fill, or subtract one path from another
* Quickly find all instances of a specific process color and replace them with a PMS spot color
* Place text on a path, manipulate the path and text
* Use Adobe help or online forums to quickly find solutions to problems you can't solve immediately
++ Photoshop ++
* Remove the background from a design or photograph
* Adjust tones, levels in a photo so it pops
* Mockup a design by placing the customer's logo on a photo of a blank garment, export as a jpg, pdf
++ Windows ++
* Navigate your way around a PC and find files on a server
* Troubleshoot basic printing problems in a PC environment
You'll really stand out if you also have experience with:
* Creating spreadsheets with formulas
* Managing inventory and ordering supplies
* Creating and installing professional signs, window graphics, etc
* Garment procurement, especially t-shirts
* Fixing/troubleshooting machines, from computers to mechanical devices
This is a fun, busy job where you get to apply your Adobe skills every day. It's also a great opportunity to learn.
Another great thing about this job is that you get to make finished products. Pressing shirts is really fun, and it's even more fun to see the customer's face light up and say, "that's dope - you rock!"
We're looking for someone who wants to join a team and take pride in their work. To us, that means you will support your co-workers. It means you want to enjoy where you work, and you bring a positive attitude with you every day. It means you are comfortable communicating openly, even about your own mistakes (we all make them, the idea is not to blame, but to learn from them). It means you've got our back, and we have yours.
We need full-time help (ideally 9am-6pm Mon,Tues, & Tues-Sat), but we're open to part-time and flexible schedules.
This is an in-house position. It cannot be done on a freelance basis.
Finally, we need people who can follow directions well.
If this sounds like a good fit for you, apply like this:
* email me a quick description (1-2 paragraphs) of why this is a great fit for you
* attach your resume
* if you have an online portfolio, feel free to include a link to that
