Bipolar disorder, also known as Manic Depression, is thought to be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. It is a condition that causes dramatic mood swings - from overly "high" and/or irritable to sad and hopeless and then back again, often with periods of normal mood in between. The periods of highs and lows are called episodes of mania and depression. In the U.S. over 4 million people suffer from Bipolar disorder.
