Smarterer is relaunching our wildly popular "...er Blog," ( http://smarterer.com/blog/ ) and we're starting off with guest (or ghostwriting) posts from professionals across a wide variety of expertise.

We'll be continuing the trend of career focused blogging, but with stress put on specific skills outlined in Smarterer's tests.

The blog posts themselves should be concise in nature, with a sound explanation of the skill or skills being highlighted, insight into how it is being used in practice today, and what trends one can expect for the future.

The ideal candidate will have a firm grasp on English language & grammar, expertise in the skill of topic, and an interest in helping others learn through written content.

For this particular installment of the skill highlight series we'll be focusing on:

Operating Systems

In addition to strong written abilities, knowledge of the following skills is required:

5) TCP/IP

Our Dev/Op's team is responsible for an increasingly virtualized (xen and EC2) Linux environment comprised of around 1000 virtual and physical servers spread across two physical data centers and Amazon's EC2. There is a heavy reliance on open-source software and automation.

Additional Responsibilities:

Will support and configure Cloud projects (AWS)
Will be on point to support various Product and Application Development teams for new web and/or data services.

Requirements:

A minimum of 5-7 years of Unix/Linux Administration experience.

A minimum of 3 – 5 years of experience with at least one scripting language i.e., python, perl or ruby
Previous work experience with Virtualization (Xen, VMWare)

Previous work experience in a fast paced and high traffic environment (httpd/tomcat) required.
Experience with Configuration Management tools required (puppet, chef, cfengine)

Experience with Amazon Web Services (EC2, S3, EMR) a plus
Experience with Hadoop a plus

Experience with Jenkins a plus

Experience with server load balancing (hardware/software/ELB)
Must have excellent analytical and communication skills

Must be a team player and able and willing to roll their sleeves up.
Ideal candidates have either start up or small-organization experiences
